WELCOME, BIKINI REBEL. WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
My name is Neghar Fonooni, leader of the Rebellion. I created this challenge because over the last few years as a coach, mother, and woman, I've grown increasingly disgusted with the term "bikini body" and everything it entails.
On a very personal level, the entire bikini body concept hits painfully close to home. For years I dieted and exercised obsessively in pursuit of a perfect body.
If I gained even 1 pound I would feel like a total failure, and even though I was extremely lean, I was still ashamed to be photographed in a bikini.
I hated my thick thighs and juicy booty. I hated the cellulite and stretch marks. I never felt powerful or confident in a bikini, even when I was 12% body fat!
Today, 20 pounds heavier and fully in my power, I'm not ashamed of my body or how it looks in a bikini. Instead, I'm confident and comfortable in my skin—regardless of the inevitable fluctuations of my body.
I own more bikinis now than I did when I was at my leanest—and I even shot in a bikini with my professional photographer without obsessing over photo shoot prep.
I won't make excuses for my body and I refuse to be told that it needs to look a particular way in order to pluck a bikini from my growing collection.
Most importantly, I affirm that there is no ONE way to have a body. I recognize that I am powerful, magical, and worthy—just as I am. I can wear whatever the hell I choose, because it's MY choice. No magazine, celebrity trainer, or beauty standard gets to decide that for me.
My body looks different now than it did in 2009, but that's not actually the point. The point is that I stand firmly in the truth that my body doesn't define my worth.
Period. The end.
Alas, as we head into the Summer season, we'll see an exponential increase in programs that promise to craft that "bikini body you've always dreamed of." According to these plans, you can be "bikini ready" in just 60, 30, and even 7 days.
Now, to be fair, some of these plans actually offer legit training programs and solid nutritional advice. And, to be honest, most of them don't. But they all have one thing in common...
They operate under the assumption that your body is not currently worthy of donning a bikini, an it needs to be fixed in order to do so.
Sadly, this is not a joke or an exaggeration.
Bikini body marketing is rampant in magazines and all over the internet, but it's damaging to women as a whole because it promotes the fallacy that the only way a woman can be "bikini worthy" is if she has a perfectly lean, flawless, airbrushed physique.
The entire "bikini body" concept insinuates that you must first look a certain way before you dare subject the world to your body in a bikini.
This fallacy is total bullshit, and it's robbing us of the opportunity to embrace and accept our bodies now--just as they are. When we believe these falsities, we become ashamed, embarrassed, and obsessed with perfection. We put our bodies through hell to achieve this so-called "bikini body," and we cover ourselves up until we feel as though we've reached it.
We miss out on Summer fun. We miss out on the beauty and divinity of the body that we are presently living in. We miss out on embracing the present and all it had to offer. When we're preoccupied with the pursuit of a bikini body, we are robbed of the opportunity to be comfortable in our own skin.
BIKINI BODY IS A MYTH, AND TOGETHER WE WILL SMASH THIS MYTH.
We aren't throwing out nutrition and fitness here—that stuff is crucial to a well-lived life. I'm a fitness expert, after all, and I make a living helping other women transform their bodies and minds. You can absolutely continue to train and eat in a way that will help your body shed fat and build muscle and strength.
But you don't have to put your life on hold until you reach the seemingly unreachable end of that journey.
You don't have to cover up one more second, simply because the world has told you aren't bikini ready yet. You can love your body NOW. You can wear a bikini NOW, if that's something you truly want. Hell, even if you don't want to wear a bikini, you're still bikini ready.
To get a bikini body, all you need to do is put a bikini on your body (or not)—affirming that it's YOUR choice, and no one else's.
Of course, this is easier said than done. We all have years and years of programming to overcome. We have to work diligently and gently to shift our mindsets and cultivate an attitude of inherent self-worth and infallible body-confidence.
